Annapurna Trekking, Nepal
“I am compiling thoughts as I trek through an area called Annapurna (which means source of water and bread). Today's lodge is at 6000 feet overlooked by snowcapped peaks towering another 10-15 thousand feet. The lower hills are terraced with literally hundreds of layers. Many varieties of grains, but predominantly rice (harvested several months after the monsoons of June and July), wheat, and millet. In November the temperature is temperate -- 80 for the high, low 50's at night.
I'm sure most of you follow Nepalese politics. Our guide made a "voluntary" payment to the local Mao Communist rep who was standing guard at the trailhead. He gave us a receipt, thanked us, posed for a picture, and told us "Have a nice day." Bottom line: they participate in the government and buy into the fact that tourism is a cash cow that infuses money into the economy. So hands off tourists. Also, half of our trekking permit fees support local communities.
Re: trekking -- physically and mentally challenging. Lots of rock steps and decisions on where to position your feet. The views of the mountainsides and the Himalayas are spectacular. We encounter smiling people who are welcoming. This group of humanity appears to be content with life, but life is a constant struggle. How will new expectations affect them?
Trekking helps us learn how others live. Also we think about ourselves from the outside in. I feel the experience helps integrate previous experiences and learning."
